The One and Only Sister

In a time when family portraits were rare and stiff, this one feels alive. They hadn’t all been together in years. Now all quite a few years older, they gathered once more in front of the old family home with its cherry red shutters. The brothers argued over who baked the best bread, who rode the fastest horse, who remembered the words to their childhood songs.

The sister listened, laughing softly.

When the photographer asked them to pose, they pushed her to the middle — the only sister and still their quiet center. Later, she would look at that photo and think, “For a moment, they were all mine again.”
