Every morning, as sunlight spilled over the Mallorcan hills, the old man and his donkey began their slow, familiar walk down the winding path to the olive groves. His name was Mateu, and he had worked on those fields for decades. His donkey Pep had been by his side for half of them.

People in the village often joked who was more stubborn, but they all agreed on one thing: the two were gentle souls. Where Mateu went, Pep followed. Whether it was market day or fiesta, they shared everything—stories, silences, even their lunch of bread and olives.

The photograph was taken on the last day Mateu worked the fields. Mateu had burst out laughing—he said he’d never looked better, standing next to his loyal friend Pep, who stood still, his ears alert, as if proud to be immortalized. The abstract shapes in the background—arches, spirals, leaves, and stars—mirror the their shared life, taking turns and twists, leaving memories like brushstrokes. Some faded, others bright, but all infused with warmth.

Mateu never needed riches. He had sun, soil, and Pep. In a world that kept speeding up, their friendship was a quiet rebellion—a reminder that loyalty and love are the true harvest of a life well lived.
