After lunch, when the sun made everything glow, one child placed a crumpled crown on his head and climbed onto his royal horse. “I’m the king,” he declared. “It’s my birthday!” (Even if it wasn’t.) His guards followed close behind. Their hats were just paper, but today, they felt like gold. They marched through tall grass and puddle-lakes, waved to invisible villagers, and bowed to squirrels who didn’t care much at all. They didn’t need a crowd. Just each other, a little imagination— and maybe cake at the end. When the parade was over, the Little King grinned. “Best birthday ever,” he said. Even if it wasn’t.
